Argentinian Honeymoon

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are planning on traveling to Argentina at the beginning of March for two weeks. We really want to go to
Buenos Aires,
El Calefate to see the glaciers at Perito Moreno,
Patagonia- Torres del Plaine
Peninsula Valdes to see the wildlife...

ABOUT US
I'm originally London, England so the arts, culture and history are big on my list. I then moved to Vancouver, Canada so lots of nature outdoorsy things such as hiking, being outdoors. My husband is a New Yorker, but loves nature and hiking. Right now he's feeling a little burned out so some downtime might be good for us. I don't think we have time for Mendoza, although I'd love to go. I've heard Santiago is a must visit place...

How would you plan two weeks?

Torres del Paine (and Santiago) is in Chile, and not that easy to get to/from. You can take a long and rather boring bus ride from El Calafate (which is also in Patagonia), with variable delays at the border, but then you're stuck unless you go south to the nearest airport at Punta Arenas. (Or take the three day boat trip north, but you don't have time.) And staying in the park can be seriously expensive.

I would drop Torres del Paine and replace it with the Iguazu waterfalls, which are quite spectacular. (See my photos at https://kwilhelm.smugmug.com/Travel/...Iguazu-Brazil/ and https://kwilhelm.smugmug.com/Travel/...a-2012/Iguazu/ )

Fly in and out of BsAs, and fly from BsAs to Iguazu and El Calafate. I didn't get to Valdes, but you have a choice of flying or 20+ hours on a bus. South American buses can be very good, and if it's night bus it would save you sightseeing time, but not great for a honeymoon.

BTW, I did NOT consider Santiago a "must visit place", although admittedly the main museum was closed when I was there. I preferred Valparaiso, but still not a must visit. (Click on my name for my TR.)

Thank you for your reply Thursdaysd, we really appreciate it. Have you been to Bariloche? If so how many days are enough here...also how many days would you recommend for the Iguazu falls, Buenos as well as El Calafate?

Any places you stayed at and any recommendations for each of these would be great!!

Yes, I did Bariloche. If you start here and skip around a bit you'll see most of the places I stayed:

I tend to sleep at the low end of moderate (although of course that's subjective) and aside from the Duque in BsAs I don't know that I would recommend my hotels for someone on a honeymoon.

In my opinion, the scenery in SA easily outshines the cities, so I would spend less time in BsAs and more in the countryside, but a lot of people love the city. If you start there you'll likely need a day to get over jet lag and you shouldn't have any trouble filling at least two more.

For Iguazu it depends on whether you are visiting both sides. Brazil is waiving the visa requirement for US citizens this year, you need to check when that goes into effect. I recommend one day for each side.

I spent two days in El Calafate, which I think worked well, and also went up to El Chalten, maybe a substitute for TdP. Another two for Bariloche. BTW, when I say two days I mean three nights, you really need to count nights.

Thank you @thursdaysd, with the outbreak of the Zika virus we are having to postpone this trip we had finally nailed down just as a precaution unfortunately. Thank you for your travel advice. I was reading through your logs and your trip sounded amazing!

Glad you enjoyed the TR, it was a good trip! Sorry about the postponement, hope you come up with a good alternative - Alaska, maybe, if you want glaciers?
