Extended Stay in Buenos Aires
Hi -
I am planning a trip to Argentina - Buenos Aires. I am a very active 40 yo male, who doesn't mind staying in a single room of a hostel or homstay - if it gives me exposure to people and socializing. One of my main purposes of traveling to BA and Argentina in general is photography (although I plan to enroll ion a Spanish course at UBA.) I plan to be there for about three months, so frugalness helps.
With all of this said, my question is does anybody have recommendations of where I should stay being I am traveling alone and want some aspect socializing and 'street' photography?
Any information or thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks,
Glenn

Generally when staying for a long time most will rent an apartment in BA which is what we did for our month there. the rest of our time in Argentian we either just turned up an found a small hostal or pre booked using either www.hostelworld.com or www.hostelbookers.com. These provide access to backpacker type hostel so you will meet lots of other travellers to socialize with (but not many Argentine nationals with whom to practice your Spanish ).
As far as photography is concerned , I am not sure exactly what you mean by "street photograpy" but would guess taht San Telmo on a Sunday and La Boca would provide plenty of material.
Here is alink to our blog which includes some of my photos which may provide some ideas. Entries from 69 onwards cover Argentina.
PS Take LOTS of memory for you camera you will need it!

Hello,
Even you're going to be there for 3 months it may still work out cheaper in a hostel and as you said its a much better way to meet people... i would recommend www.minihostels.com they'll give you impartial advice and have some really nice places! Or you could look for a temporary apartment, but these can be expensive, probably around $1200 USD for the month. You could also look on craigslist, they often have posts for temporary accommodation. For photography BA is amazing! With the tall buildings you get some really good effects with the shade and it's nearly always sunny, also around 5pm the light has a beautiful glow, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
In terms of districts to stay go for Palermo or San Telmo, Recoleta is v.nice but more pricey, La Boca is v.authentic but can be a bit dangerous at night (great for photos though)Puerto Madero is the most modern and currently most popular area but personally I find it too sterile and generic, good for photos again though! You should also check out cultural centres such as Recoleta Cultural Centre, Fundacion PROA and the MALBA (much cheaper on Weds), Palais du Glace all have excellent photography exhibitions!
Since you said you're active in your first days you could do a running or walking day tour to get an idea of the districts, they're great! I've done both with my sisters and they're really fun!
Enjoy!
