A tour of India that won't kill us

My husband and I are over 70 and have dietary issues (gluten and dairy intolerance, fructan intolerance). We want to visit India, but have heard horror stories about other folks suffering from gastrointestinal troubles, parasites, etc. is there a recommended tour?

A tour won't save you from things not under their control. I've traveled in India quite a bit & have gotten sick almost every time. It sounds like you have more opportunities for food difficulties than many who travel there & to be honest, I suggest you find somewhere else to go that interests you. It's no fun worrying every day that you'll eat something you shouldn't & if it's not fun, what's the point?

Would this be a tour that includes all food being brought in from Europe or the US?

Seriously though, yes, you can probably anticipate a bout of Delhi belly. Your intolerances are on top of the need to be careful about water (even tooth brushing has to be done with bottled water) and food safety. I have no idea how one eats in India with gluten, dairy and fructose intolerances. India is my favorite country, and I have spent a total of 4 months visiting. But, in your case I would probably just stick with mainstream US or Australian or European destinations where you can find places to eat that can accommodate your needs. As I type this, here in the US, I am recovering from a bad bout of diarrhea (think colonoscopy prep level) that I got from something here in the "safe" food US.

If you would attempt touring India, I suggest you hire a car and driver, with an occasional guide, and go by yourselves. Price is probably less than a standard group tour also. And, I will be honest with you: I went on a tour to Morocco once where one person on the small group tour had gluten intolerance that she was obsessive about. Her focus on her gluten intolerance finally became intolerant for the rest of the group and the guide to the point where the excellent, well-experience guide finally ended up telling her, "I am not responsible for your diet". I am not suggesting that your personalities are at all this way, but you need to be aware of the fact that India is not a culture/environment where you will be able to quiz waiters in-depth about what various foods contain.
