Mega Rockstar rip off for handicapped

I will give the good as well as the bad. But my wife and I were totally ripped off both our opinions and will never give another penny to Virgin.

So for my birthday, I purchased the best suite on the ship that was handicapped accessible. This comes with "Mega Rockstar" service, free drinks, an unlimited in room bar. Now there is only ONE handicapped Mega Rockstar suite, the smallest class called a Gorgeous Suite. What makes it handicapped, is a door wide enough for a wheelchair, and bathroom rails. Since I wanted that level of service there no choices in rooms, despite me wanting to ticket the Massive Suite, I settled for only room I could.

This one suite 15 291 Z is directly under the ship smoking area. So we paid 10s of thousands of dollar for a room and balcony that smelled like an ASHTRAY.

Now as a "Mega Rockstar" you get ONE VIP area on the ship. Richards Rooftop. Which is pretty much directly above the Massive Suites at the front. Our room was next to an elevator and a staircase. The stairs went directly to the VIP Lounge. The elevate located at the VIP SUITES, does NOT go up to the VIP Lounge. So for a "Mega Rockstar" to go the VIP Lounge you have to transverse the length of the ship twice in your wheelchair. This is a CRUEL and ridiculous abuse of the handicapped. Can you picture trying to wheel through a crowded pool area to wait an a bank of elevators to go up one level and then wheel through another deck of crowds to hit the only VIP Lounge on the ship? People staring and making remarks, which we PAID for the privilege to be humiliated. Don't forget our suite smelled like an ASHTRAY, so we certainly did not want to stay there despite the HUGE price we paid.

So now you spend sometime in the VIP lounge and you want a meal, you can order one of like 5 snacks or you can wheel yourself to be back of the boat. Deck 15 basically has a "food court" at the back, which is not much of an option if you can't stand in lines. This leaves going down to deck 5/6/7. There is no VIP seating, there is no VIP menu, you do have one advantage, your "Rockstar agent" can get you a reservation, but it no different from any other table.

Service was not great, you can tell the crew is trained to get your order on in a single shot so they have the least contact with you. Food was okay, sorry to say until we finally tried the "Test Kitchen" my favorite meal was a Nathan's hot dog from the social club. The oysters at "The wake" were good too, but you had to buy them for extra, even as a "Mega Rockstar", no food upgrades were included at all.

The schedule of when things are open on the ship made no sense. Several times we went down to try and get a hot dog for example and found the club closed till 3pm, then the same club the same day we went down at 3pm and found that day they open at 5pm. Virgin could you not at least list that on your barely working APP???

Because of the tight spaces, there was basically no handicapped seating. For example going to see live music at "On the Rocks", my wife had to stay in her wheel chair while I had to rearrange things myself so I can sit on a footstool. All the seat was very low to the ground and zero places for someone handicapped to grab onto to either sit or stand back up.

There is no way for someone handicapped to really do the excursions. The mobility equipment you rent is limited to use on the ship. Okay so we knew we could not go the excursions, but what we did not know is, half the darn ship closed, the VIP Lounge closed, but hey the smokers over our LUXURY SUITE found a pastime of blowing around smoke so while the ship was still our SUITE was unusable. So we wandered the ship for over an hour trying to figure out what was still open. We finally found "The dockhouse" but no place to sit.

By the third day of the cruise all my wife wanted to do was get off the darn ship and go home. This was my "once in a lifetime" splurge and I feel like I got MUGGED by Virgin Voyages.

So sorry you had to deal with this. Sounds like very poor placement of a "special" suite.
Did you also send this information to the people in charge at Virgin Voyages?
Extra for oysters? I thought Virgin boasted EVERYTHING was included!?

Sounds like a horrible experience. I have learned from other travelers here on Fodors about the importance of doing extensive research on cruise critic before booking any cruise.

I am so sorry that happened to you. Knowing that I would never cruise with Virgin. It's law that 10% of the rooms need to be accessible.

Does that law apply to cruise ships that are registered overseas?

Very unfortunate but agree with J62, there is no shortage of information for potential cruisers on Cruise Critic, in addition to numerous vloggers (YouTube). If you had asked in advance on Fodors you might have been led to those resources if none of the few cruisers here could help by looking at deck plans. With a huge investment, I suspect many would also have recommended using an experienced travel agent.
