I also have been researching a Yucatan trip. We'd fly from Leon or Queretaro or cdmx instead of driving all the way. Easyway gets good reviews and I believe they offer one way drop off from Merida to Cancun. No personal experience. Just until someone else chimes in.

As always, many thanks baldone. I did get a quote for EasyWay as they were recommended on TA by several people. However, they seem expensive even compared with the majors - something like 30-40% higher.
As always with car rental, I struggle with trying to find out what is actually included & excluded in the total cost. In addition to the usual CDW excesses etc. it seems that in Mexico liability cover for accidents, in addition to the usual third party liability insurance, is required. I shall carry on looking and will report back.
