I've never heard of a convenience charge for a plane ticket. Are you sure the website you are using is actually United's? You should be on www.united.com.

Welcome to Fodors. What country are you in?? India or someplace else in south Asia? it sounds like you may be using a third party travel agent like IRCTC. If so and they charge a convenience fee -- that's how they make money so doubt if you can avoid ir..
