had to rebook new flight after Lufthansa cancellation

Hi, our our trip to Europe last week, Lufthansa canceled our flight from Milan MXP to Munich MUC right as we were leaving for the airport. The app gave us an option for an earlier flight that day and I selected that and accepted through app. Shortly after I was told we were on waitlist for the flight, as well as all other 'options' for the following day, with no guarantee of arriving in MUC on same day or next day. The purpose of our trip was to attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau for which we had a 3-night package beginning the next day. Online I was able to see Lufthansa had a flight with availability from Milan LIN to MUC on our original departure date so I booked 3 tickets online. Anyone know if Lufthansa will reimburse me this purchase? I don't know why they wouldn't give us this as an option. I know there were other people on our flight that did same thing as I did according to ticket agent.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try to contact Lufthansa to get them to put you on that flight?
I believe that would have been the correct approach first, so if you did not then they may not reimburse any difference...

If you re-booked yourselves you're likely SOL. If you were in communications with LH they almost certainly would have switched flights for you. Just because they offer a specific substitute doesn't mean they can't won't put you on a different flight if you ask. But you essentially became a free agent when you booked independently.

sometimes, all you have to do is ask to get what you want

if you bought a new ticket for the LIN flight then i would expect a refund for the segment that was cancelled and did not have an acceptable option.

The OP absolutely needs to speak to LH. The post is not that clear (waitlisting, etc) but it sounds like he accepted the substitute LH offered for that cancelled flight. Then got frustrated (understandable) and booked new tix himself. If so, he could be considered a no-show on the new flight and LH would be right to deny any sort of refund. A big question is what he did when receiving the message(s) about being waitlisted.

I'm not totally clear on the situation after he accepted the re-booking, since he then mentions waitlisting. Normally when there is a re-booking waitlist isn't an issue . . . but with so many flights being overbooked, delayed and cancelled almost anything could have happened. But we agree, at this point his only recourse is to talk to LH.

Am guessing that the app would have notified the OP if they cleared the waitlist or not. It would be good to know, esp. if they didn't.
