Really sad to hear this. I think it was the best of the forums I've participated in. Particularly sad that all that fantastic information will no longer be available. Wish I'd taken down details from some particular threads.

Suze, that 2020 shutdown seemed presented as a mysteriously kinda', sorta', definitely-maybe 'temporary' affair. However, many observers felt then that the timing and vibe did not bode well for any potential reopening at all.
And sadly, they were correct.

Yo ILC,
I'm just guessing, but it appears to have been a long-brewing business decision wherein the new ownership felt that Thorn Tree had run its course and no longer fit into their future plans. Its worth noting that TT was actually a perennial award-winner back in its heyday, 'Best Travel Forum' and all that. Never thought that I'd see the day when the LP brand (which I trumpeted no end during my semi-pro travel writing days back in the '80s and '90s) would become of little use.
Lonelier Planet.
I am done. The end.

Note that there is a smallish, new version of Thorn Tree over on reddit now. Giora, LucaPal and Nutraxfornerves played a role in that welcome reprise, from their bases in Japan, San Francisco and Palermo. I have joined, as have a number of former Thorn Tree members, nearly all of us with new handles (out of necessity). There is far less lenience for negative posts and trolls, so it seems a sanitized version, a good thing. Over there now, we're all discussing our various adventures in India, plus where to eat in Spain, among many other topics.
