Road Trip from Launceston to Hobart

Hello all,

My husband and I are planning a 6 day road trip on Aug 25-31 from Launceston to Hobart. We enjoy nature, good food and drinks, history and art. So far this is our planned itinerary. Let us know if it's doable or if we have to delete and replace certain areas due to distance or season, as well as if there are good and better places that we're missing along the way. Thank you.

Aug 25: Arrive in Launceston
- Evandale Market (Sundays only)
- Cataract Gorge

2 nights in Launceston

Aug 26
- Cradle Mountain
- Tamar Valley
- explore Launceston CBD (if time permits)

Aug 27: Depart for Coles Bay with stops at:
- Bridestowe Lavender Farm

- Bicheno Blowhole
- The Farm Shed
Overnight at Coles Bay

Aug 28: Depart for Hobart with quick stops at:
- Freycinet Marine Farm
- Wineglass Bay Lookout

Aug 29
- Mt. Wellington

Hi Q's -

I've been to TAS twice, both times for 16 days each. Your itinerary seems pretty full on, especially for August, when the weather could be shite and days are relatively short.

As an example, Launceston to Cradle Mountain is a three hour drive each way, which leaves no time in Cradle Mountain. What do you plan to do in such a short time? Cradle Mountain is a highlight, I'd suggest spending at least a night there, two if you can manage it.

You also want to visit Tamar Valley that day, which is 60 km in the opposite direction. There's just no way. You probably won't even have enough daylight.

The drive from Hobart to Port Arthur is over an hour, each way (longer if you make stops en route), and you could easily spend all day there (we did). I just don't see how you're going to fit in the rest of your wish list that day.

I also highly recommend spending more time at Cradle Mountain. We stayed in a cabin at Cradle Mountain Highlanders.

I agree with Melnq8, you're not giving yourself enough time to do the activities you've listed. For instance, you'd need a whole day to visit the wineries of Tamar Valley, and need a couple of hours to hike to the Wineglass Lookout. I spent nearly the entire day at MONA. The trip took 5.5 hours (including the round-trip ferry). It's not just an art museum but has restaurants and even a wine tasting bar for Moorilla Winery. If you'll be going there, take the time to enjoy it, especially as you enjoy art and wine. I had thought about visiting Hobart's Botanic Garden after visiting MONA, but there just wasn't time (and this was in April, when there are a few more hours of daylight).

I haven't visited Cradle Mountain, but I'd want to at least spend one night there, as Melnq8 recommends, and in winter give myself more time for the drive.

Thank you all for the suggestions. We have simplified our itinerary quite a bit based of your recommendations. We will save Cradle Mountain and Lavender Farm when we have more time and when the season is better.
We will spend more time at the wineglass Bay and proceed to Port Arthur and spend the night there before we head to Hobart. We plan to spend most of the following day in MONA.
