Where to go Maui or Kauai

We own a timeshare in West Maui and go almost every year. We have gone to Kauai and there is no doubt about it, Kauai is beautiful, but we found there wasn't enough for us to do. Maui has more to do and many restaurants. It just dpends on what you're looking for. Both are romantic and scenic. Maui has night life.

Both islands are beautiful. Kauai is very lush and less crowded. Maui is a bit more commercial but does have the nightlife which Kauai has very little of. Both places have great restaurants. I wouldn't say there isn't enough to do. We were there for 5 days and didn't have time to do everything that we wanted. Most of the activities on Kauai are more oriented to the outdoors and tend to be active adventures.

We have been to Hawaii several times, and have stayed in Honolulu twice, Big Island twice, Maui twice, and Kauai three times, with a fourth coming up this summer. Between Maui and Kauai, my vote is, without a question, Kauai. Maui to me is very commercial. You expect this in Honolulu (which I would go to over Maui any day), but not in Maui. There is a highway built that goes around the west part of the island where you get off at exits that take you to various concentrated resort areas. Wherever you go, I feel that people are screaming at you, to take tours, eat at certain restaurants, buy souveniers, etc. Kauai is much more quiet, and to me, much more beautiful. There is a lot to do, but in a more quiet and what seems to me a more Hawaiian setting. The Hyatt Kauai is where we always stay, it is in Poipu, on the southern end, where there's not much rain (as opposed to the north side of the island where it seems to rain every day), and the hotel is beautiful. I'm sure there are people who like Maui better, but if I can help it, I won't go there again.

My vote is for Maui! (Of course, it's the only place I've been in Hawaii.) But, Me & my husband went 2 years ago for a delayed honeymoon. It was beautiful!!!!! Sure, their is some commercialism, but it doesn't diminish it's natural beauty, IMO. We stayed in Wailea and it was nice, but we found ourselves driving to the other side of the island quite often. We did see Jerry Rice & Ralph Lauren in upscale Grand Wailea Resort Bar, though. I would recommend that you get Frommer's guide to Maui (or Kauai). There was so much to do and see in Maui that we had to plan it out and were so glad for it. Highly recommend: Taking your own personal tour through hana highway (gorgeous), bring a picnic lunch and stop at one of many waterfalls along the way, also biking down Mt. Halakala (sp?) on a "Sunrise" tour (you watch the sun rise over clouds at 10,000 ft.-the most incredible experience! also the dinner cruises are nice. There's so many fun, romantic, beautiful things to do on Maui, I couldn't imagine wanting anything more. Congratulations!
