Below there are some ideas.
However, I can not understand how somebody decides how many days to spend in a place, before he knows what is there to be visited.

In case it helps, here's a link to trip reports of my first 2 visits to Berlin (have since been back a 3rd time & would go again).

You will gather that I am more interested in art & opera, not so interested in World War 2 history.
There are other threads here with notes on *tons* of sights by Berlin experts, if you search for them.

Try to find a used copy of Peter Fritzsche and Karen Hewitt's Berlinwalks, 1994. It will give you an introduction to Berlin as a city, its development, and 5 walks in different parts of the city.
From one of my trip reports:
We also recommend the 3.5 hour round trip on the Landwehr Kanal and the Spree which gives a good view of Berlin old and new. The tour starts near the Jannowitzbrücke U & S-Bahn station. We had no reservations, and got the last seats on the boat. The commentaries are all in German, but we could have received a hand-out in English if necessary. The Landwehr Kanal goes through the old neighborhoods with their 19th century houses--although there are exceptions--while the ride up the Spree showcases all the brand new buildings around the government center.

This is great info. I am visiting Berlin for 5 days in the beginning of October. I had no idea what I wanted to see but I just knew I had to spend more than a couple of days there. Can't wait to access these links/recommendations. Just what I was looking for!

We were in Berlin for 5 days in early June.We stayed at the Circus Hotel in a wonderful location in the former East Berlin. All forms of transportation were close by.The rooms were small but adequate and a very reasonable rate for a good location. The front desk staff were very helpful. The food is good in their small restaurant. Museum Island is within walking distance and a must visit.Hope you enjoy Berlin, our visit was beyond my expectations.
