A New Vatican Necropolis Tour to Open In Autumn '06
I don't have a link for this it was set to me as an email newsletter by www.zenit.org.
The tombs and street were discovered 3yrs ago while building a new parking lot within Vatican City. And it will be open for public tours next Fall.
There are 30 mausoleums and 70 individual tombs dating from 1stC-BC to 3rdC-AD.
The tombs are alongside the ancient main road called the Via Triumphalis.
I'm guessing but I think this necropolis will be somewhere in the northern part of Vatican City because the Via Triumphalis angled NW after crossing "Nero's Bridge" (just south of Ponte V. Emanuelle). Regards, Walter

That's a link to the article. It's about the Vatican Museum's 500th anniversary commemorations.

Limited tours are starting this week.
I didn't have any luck finding booking info in any of the News articles posted below.
And I couldn't get the Search on www.vatican.va to work properly for me ("To busy to use". Perhaps someone else might have better luck if it has been added to their website?

p.s. I'm wondering about that infants skeleton with the hen's egg.
Perhaps someone will know. this keeps popping up in my mind.
Wasn't an egg used in early Christian burials as a secret symbol for Christians? The egg meaning the body will rise again like being reborn?

My search seems to be working Ok but no mention of this yet on the Vatican website. I leave for Rome on the 18th and have a Scavi Tour reserved for the 23rd. It would be great to be able to see this as well. I'll keep checking for more information. Thanks for posting. margaret

There is another ongoing thread about this necropolis.
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34882180
So let this one sink out of sight.
I just wanted to add this 'tinyurl' provided by 'Andalusia' on that other thread for booking this tour, so in the future if someone comes across this thread 1st they will have that info also.
