New year's eve in Mexico City or Oaxaca
I'm trying to use my frequent flyer miles to book my trip to Mexico. Depending on which dates I pick, I could arrange to be in either Mexico City or Oaxaca for New Year's eve. Anyone have any experiences to share in either place? Positives? Negatives? Thanks.

Definetely Oaxaca. Mexico City can be fun but in a metropolis sense (hard to breathe, overpop. very industrial). Oaxaca is a very trendy yet genuine place (Southern Cali. influence). I was there two years ago in Jan. and had a great time. It has a very European vibe downtown (the Zocalo reminded me of Montmartre) but has the Mayan/Mexican allure just beyond city limits. Don't forget to try the Chapuletas (Chapulinas?).

Have been in Oaxaca several times for New Year's eve. I've enjoyed it a lot. It is very crowded and busy in the Zocalo area. As opposed to being open the Zocalo is packed with all kinds of stalls and activities. If you don't want to put up with this you can walk a block or two and things are very calm. Just a comment on the above- There are numerous indigenous groups in Oaxaca State. The principal influence you encounter is Zapoteca and Mixteca. Mayans are further south. Are you trying to say Chapulines- grasshoppers-I've only had them after some tequilla- not bad. Have fun on your trip.

Haven't been during New years, but have been around for soccer and religious events I didn't know about...I forgot it is a city of 30 million people and they love to celebrate. I was unprepared for the massive crowds that will gather, there are just so many zealous people celebrating. I agree about the pollution, it did bother me at times. I have enjoyed many good times there and in other Mexican cities, but I just wanted to comment about the crowds...many people forget how many folks live there and they all seem to love to celebrate
Have a wonderful time !!!!!!
