Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice on driving routes in western Hungary and would love local insight.

We’ll be renting a car in Budapest and driving to Vas County to visit family. We have:

One full day to drive from Budapest to Vas County

One full day in Vas County with family

Then we’ll drive back to Budapest the following day

A few constraints / priorities:

My spouse can’t tolerate very long stretches in the car, so we’re hoping to break the drive up with meaningful stops

We’re very interested in historic churches, abbeys, and architecture

Places like Ják Chapel and Tihany Abbey are high on our list

We’d also love to touch Lake Balaton

My questions:

Is it worth routing through Győr on the way to Vas County, or would you skip it in favour of another route? We intend to drive the northern route of Lake Balaton on our way back to Budapest.

Are there alternative routes from Budapest to Vas County that offer great stops (cathedrals, monasteries, historic towns) without adding too much driving time?

We’re not trying to see everything, just want a beautiful, unrushed drive with a few memorable stops rather than one long push.

Any route suggestions, favourite towns, or “don’t miss this if you’re already passing through” advice would be very appreciated. Thanks so much.
