What to See & Where to Eat in Vejer de la Frontera
Based on reading various posts and TRs we have decided to stay 3 nights in Vejer de la Frontera. Would love to hear any suggestions for special places to see and where to eat in the area. We will have spent 5 nights in Cadiz before going to Vejer de la Frontera. Thanks for your help

Some restaurants will still be closed in February. Some will be open but closed Mondays to Wednesdays or some variation of that.
Will you have a car?
In Vejer itself, the most popular places are the ones associated with the Hotel La Califa including EL JARDIN DE CALIFA. These serve many dishes influenced by the region's Arab history. I've never eaten in any, though, but friends have enjoyed them. This article is in Spanish but has pics of the dishes and the dining areas.

Two small restaurants, also in the town, are: NEREA and EL MURO.
EL MURO. Open in February. https://elmurorestaurante.es
NEREA website is down.
There is a string of restaurants along the beach of El Palmar de Vejer, a few minutes drive from the town.
AZOTEA EL PALMAR (sibling of the one in Sevilla) will not be open then, but I think EL ALFAREZ will be: https://www.restauranteelalferez.com/pdf/sala.pdf
You'll notice that, on many local menus, there is a separate section listing the "almadraba" tuna dishes. You'll see this in Cadiz, too.
If you want to try a lot of dishes, always ask if they will serve half portions. I have to do that a lot since I'm alone when I go there.
I hope you will have a car. So then you can try three pretty spectacular restaurants (you have to check if the second two will be open in February)
1. EL CAMPERO. Famous restaurant specializing in blue fin tuna, in the non-curated port town of Barbate, celebrated for the tuna catch I the spring. They have many many other dishes besides tuna. Despite its fame, this is not a fancy restaurant and prices are very fair considering the quality of their ingredients. You can order a very large portion of belly tuna (o-toro?) for abut 35 euro..they also offer half portions. Much cheaper than Tokyo. Diners in the bar area, where I eat, wear jeans and sneakers, while the dining rooms are a touch more elegant. (No one dresses up for any of the restaurants in this area, nor in Cadiz)

2. LA CASTILLERIA Beautiful open-air (covered) space; specializes in meats from their grill and they also make some of the best salads I've ever tried. Open only for lunch outside the high season. Must book ahead. Not sure if they will be open in February, though:

3. RESTAURANTE ANTONIO. My favorite seafood/fish restaurant in Spain!! Cozy seating in the bar area; large white dining room faces the sea and the beach. You have to phone to book a table; no online booking. This is outside the beach town of Zahara de los Atunes, about a half an hour's,, easy drive from Vejer. Expensive if you splash out on a lot of shellfish; try their large red "carabinero" shrimp.

Just below the (hill) town of Vejer, VENTA PINTO is a traditional Andalusia venta, roadside inn. Open from morning until night; it's a cozy place filled with locals that serves everything from burgers to fried sea anemones. There is a lively bar area and a few dining rooms. Very famous for their delicious sandwich on a roll: pork with red lard, pressed panini-style. It's addictive!! They have a little bodega next door with all kinds of snacks, pastries from Medina Sidonia (based on Arab recipes), local cheeses, and a small selection of wines.
There is a winery a bit south of there, for tastings; I've never been, though. The name is BODEGAS GALLARDO:
https://bodegasgallardo.com
Maribel has an online guide to the COSTA DE LA LUZ which is really helpful, as you might imagine!
Driving past ANTONIO, from Vejer, you reach the important Roman port of BAELO CLAUDIA. This is a must see; excellent small museum and ruins spread out adjacent to the wide sandy beach, which has one of the largest sand dunes in Europe.

A few minutes from Vejer town, the MONTENMEDIO CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM:

Several walking trails from Vejer, to the windmills and the water mills:
https://turismovejer.es/en/the-trail...ure-in-nature/
There is a beautiful drive from Zahara to Barbate, along the sea, with marshes on one side and cliffs on the other. Stunning!!
Continue past Barbate towards El Palmar, and there are more walking trails, in the natural reserve:

It;'s very nice to walk along the beach of El Palmar on a nice day; cows graze in the grasses edging the sands.

A "white town" near Vejer that is worth visiting, especially if you want to try their famous pastries, is MEDINA SIDONIA.
Note that locals refer to sherry and other fortified wines as "vinos generosos," a term I'd not heard before visiting this area.

I just found this article about VENTA PINTO, the rustic restaurant I mentioned, above, just below the town of Vejer. It is in Spanish, but it extolls the restaurant, and its legendary sandwich of pork loin in red lard and has a few photos of the restaurant, and the sandwich.
I urge you to give that sandwich a try; it might sound odd (or worse) but it is so delicious---clean, lean white slices of pork meat bound by the red lard, used like you might use butter. There is nothing barnyard-y or wierd about the taste, and the sandwich costs bout 4 euro; I cannot finish the whole thing!

And here is an article about the restaurant NAREA in Vejer; it talks about their signature dish, skate--also cooked in red lard. I had this dish as part of their very reasonably priced tasting menu, last year. But I thought that the lard overpowered the fish, so next time I will order a different dish. But it's a restaurant to return to, and you can see the glorious view from the outdoor tables during the day. (I was there at night when the landscape is dark, so maybe try this place for lunch, instead)
