Munich winter day trips by public transport?

I've had a change of plans and now have an extra day up my sleeve in Munich and would like to use it to take a day trip (this is my second visit to Munich).

To rule out some other contenders - I have stays in both Salzburg and Nuremberg included on this trip and day trips to Regensburg and Rothenburg planned (the latter from Nuremberg). Last visit I saw Neuschwanstein Castle and Schloss Nymphenburg so those are out. I'm thinking to use the extra day somewhere in the outer skirts of Bavaria.

I'll be reliant on public transport so would like something easily accessible. Current shortlisted options are either Garmisch-Partenkirchen (would love to see Zugspitze if the weather is good), Landshut and Augsburg.

Would love to hear your thoughts on those options or whether there is maybe somewhere else I haven't considered that's worth looking at. This will be for early December.

Thanks!

Definitely Zugspitze if the weather cooperates. Keep in mind it can be damn cold and windy up there in winter, dress accordingly (I've been up there a few times in winter). You can combine this with a walk around Eibsee (take traction cleats) and a poke through Garmisch.

MIttenwald is another option, a small village easily accessible from Munich.

Seefeld, Austria, a beautiful village, especially covered in snow. It'll take just over two hours from Munich, so perhaps not an ideal day trip, but might be worth a look. You can take the train to Mittenwald and then catch a bus to Seefeld, a gorgeous drive.

Bamburg is a possiblity, but a bit of a trek from Munich, maybe as a day trip from Nurnburg if you have time (about an hour by train).

Fussen - yes, you were here for the castle, but did you spend any time in the town?

There's a few more, but the names escape me at the moment. I'll check my various trip reports and get back.

To give you an idea of how to fit the Zugspitze and Eibsee into a short winter day, you might take a look here - details on tickets, etc. Full description on Post #11:

The Boomer and the Gen-Zer: A trip of firsts

I've looked at my other reports, but unfortunately can't find the info I was looking for...I remember a few unusual day trips we made from Munich over the years, but evidently, I didn't finish those particular reports, and with my lousy memory those details might be lost forever

We’re history lovers so are looking forward to a day tour to Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.
But our visit is this month (Oktoberfest) and December will be a whole different weather situation for you.
Have a splendid time!

Eagles Nest is not accessible in winter - only from May-October.

I was going to suggest the Jennerbahn in Berchtesgaden, but it's a bit far from Munich - 2.5 hours by train. Too long for a day trip in winter IMO.
