Barcelona Hotels/Neighborhoods

We will be in Barcelona for 5 days at the end of Oct. What neighborhood/s area/s would you recommend staying in? Part of me thinks a quieter out of the way place to decompress but then I wonder if we're going to want to chill for a bit midday I don't want it to be too inaccessible. We're also straddling the line of me being picky about cleanliness and not wanting to spend too much $$.

Thanks!

Barcelona Neighbourhoods

We stayed in Poblenou in May, and it is quieter, and also near Bogatell Beach. It's generally just 1 bus or metro to get to anywhere you want to go. More centrally, Gracia and Eixample are good neighborhoods to stay in, and have a variety of places to stay in different budgets.

We once stayed in an apt in Pobleneu …a nice area but taking the public transit several times a day wasn’t what I prefer.
Normally I stay in Eixample .

Eixample is my choice. Great location as easy access to the train from the airport as well as the subway/metro. Lots to see in the area itself, a short walk to the Sagrada Familia and other Gaudi sites. Lots of shops and restaurants.

We stayed in the Eixample as well. It’s very centrally located; you can walk to so many sites. And the architecture is beautiful! Check out Hotel Gran Via.

Eixample is the best option to have a lot of things to see/do at walking distance. Poblenou is another option, specially if your hotel has a metro station near.

We stayed in the Gothic Quarter last time there, we will be staying in Eixample this September, appears to be a convenient location for getting to many sights and good restaurants.

We stayed in Born for five nights. Close to the Metro, strolling distance to many attractions, good choice of restaurants and also close to a fine linear park for unwinding.

Maybe late now. But I'm curious because everyone else seemed to say Eixample.

I like the idea of Eixample being able to walk to attractions. But how was the beach? Like was it crowded/ dirty/ water not nice?

I'm planning to go in September for a month to study Spanish, but going with kids. Interested in the quiet of Poblenou and proximity to the beach for young kids. But IDK I have this image of a city beach being dirty and full of cigarette butts T.T

Thanks.

joshuajames8805 if proximity to the beach is important, then Poblenou would be nice. When we were there in May, Bogatell Beach in Poblenou was clean and had quite a nice atmosphere. We didn’t swim because it was a bit chilly, but not because it seemed dirty. September it will likely be busier, but I believe ( others can correct me) that Bogatell is always better than the more central Barcelona beaches. It’s also nice just to walk along the park which parallels it. Poblenou also has normal services such as a pharmacy, grocery store, market, banks, which will be useful if staying a month. Good luck!

The beach could be dirty at night, because a lot of people (most are tourists) take drinks and food to their own party beach and not uses the litter bins, but usually Barcelona's beach sand is clean, every early morning it's cleaned. Sometimes, after heavy storms, the water is more dirty, but itīs usually quite clean and relatively transparent. Nowadays, smoke in the beach is forbidden, but some people smokes anyway.
For enjoy a beach day you can take the train to Sitges (about 40m) or take a car or bus to any Costa Brava town (about 2-2,5h).
Poblenou is a nice place if you want to go to the beach, but it's more far from most touristic interesting places. Eixample is the best place in my opinion.

Hi spify. Thank you, that's really helpful.

I guess for a short period of time it makes sense to be among the action. As you say, can have a beach day. Wasn't aware of Sitges but on the travel list!

Thanks again

We know a couple of savvy travelers who will apparently be staying near the Gracia subway stop this September. That is halfway down the western edge of Gracia. It seems that they have done so coz the neighborhood is a genuine residential area, all hipsters, placas (Maribel, that means 'squares' in Spanish, mkay?), cafes and such. Behind that same metro stop, there is a taxi stand. There's even a great food market there too. We are told that the husband, what with his advancing age, is losing some of his 'raw-animal-fitness-level-thieves-don't-mess-wit-me' edge, so mindful of pickpockets, the couple has opted for a less congested base: cue Gracia.

I am done. the neighborhoodz
