Trying to do the Liverpool/Wales trip from USA

Yes I realize Im not the first, but I am looking for advice. Best flight routes? Rent a car? Trains? Bars? Hostels safe?

I really want to take in some of the Liverpool experience but also circle Wales. Is there a train from Liverpool to Wales and back?
Should I rent a car?

Lay it on me, yes a nice American trying to get some UK culture in. Thank

Welcome to Fodors. Just a few quick comments. How long are you planning for this trip and WHEN? Time of year makes a big difference.

• Yes there are trains into Wales, though for the more rural parts you'd want a car.

• 'Circling Wales' would take quite a long time. Visiting North Wales from Liverpool is easy, But to 'circle Wales' would take quite a few days.

• For both Liverpool and N. Wales, Manchester in the nearest major airport with flights from the US.

Getting to south Wales is very different to north Wales.

Manchester airport is the obvious route to Liverpool and north Wales and yes you need a car in the north.
Bristol or Heathrow is more logical for the south and the train will do for a lot of it.
