Close to Heathrow but Not at Heathrow

Hello All, I will be travelling from the U. S. to the UK with stop overs in other parts of Europe. My flight back to the U.S. departs out of Heathrow – it departs on a Saturday. So, I was thinking of arriving back in UK on a Thursday evening, giving myself a whole day (Friday) to just recoup and relax. I want to stay close to Heathrow, but not in Heathrow. Any suggestions of a town, neighborhood, city close by Heathrow that has some charm, restaurants, and hotels? I just want to spend some time walking around and taking in a bit of the town/neighborhood. Thank you ~

Windsor is the most obvious option. 7 miles from the airport, Castle, river, Great Park, pubs, etc.

But there are many others -- will you have a car or using public transport?

The Piccadilly line of the Tube goes right to Heathrow so look for hotels that are close to tube stops. Hammersmith is an example.

Or do a splurge by staying near Windsor at the Oakley Court Hotel where they have lovely grounds and rooms in which you can decompress.

Richmond upon Thames, close enough to central London & close to Heathrow. Can visit Kew Gardens, Ham House or just stroll along the river, walk in Richmond Park. Bus ride to Heathrow.

Thank you to all for your wonderful suggestions - - I appreciate them all. One of my favorite tasks in planning vacation is the research. You have given me some options to research
