We were in Orvieto yesterday. It was as beautiful as we remembered. We saw many people whom we also saw earlier at nearby Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the most iconic of Italian villages. A perfect day trip from Orvieto.

I'm always puzzled by this one. Personally, since suffering the sleep deprivation of having children, I've never suffered from any kind of jet lag. Always been able to lie down for 30 minutes , have a nap and then be ready for anything. Some people have issues with long distance travel across longitudes , some people don't. I've flown into Dulles and driven straight down to Asheville, can't recall killing anyone on the way.

Thanks but need closer to Rome.
I m looking at the wonderful recommendations.
Orbetello would be close enough and relaxing for first few days albeit, nicer places are booked.
Pitigliano too far
Siene is far for our purposes; we have been there. Agree, its a intriguing town, a must see.
What about Orte?

Here's another vote for Orbetello if you can find somewhere to stay there. Where have you tried? I spent a week here a few years ago when i was attending an Italian course there:
Hotel Sole Orbetello | Hotel nel centro di Orbetello
It was clean, friendly and bang in the centre. No car park I think but the public parking isn't far away. Otherwise Porto Ercole could work.

I agree, Orbetello looks stunning.
However, going in a month so NO last minute availability for dubious husband.
Also, plans to go to Umbria/Tuscany then Florence.
Perhaps, next time when I move there--- I WISH!

FCO to Todi is over 2 hours. I love Todi, but it's not within 90 minutes of FCO and not on the way to Tuscany. Narni is barely within 90 minutes and a bit of a detour if you're headed to Tuscany after this overnight. Where are you going in Tuscany?
I like Bracciano (medieval town, castle, beautiful views of the lake) which is an hour or less from FCO and Viterbo a bit farther north (papal palace, several fountains, underground tunnels similar to Orvieto). The San Pellegrino quarter in Viterbo is particularly charming and atmospheric.
