Best route if driving on January 2nd from Cincinnati Ohio to Napa California

Hello we are headed out on January 2nd leaving Cincinnati Ohio and traveling to Napa California via car. Given the current weather conditions along all possible routes we would appreciate some suggestions as to what path to take. thank you!

Let us know what type of car and how good the tires are. How many days are you planning on? Experience driving in snow? Driving through New Orleans and Tucson might be the safest.
I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie is the highest pass on any interstate.
Is there a plan to come back during January?

If you don’t have snow tires/4WD, carry chains.

If you get to western Nebraska and there is a storm coming, stay overnight and start west on I-80 after lunch the next day. There is a big rest area at the top of the pass between Cheyenne and Larimie. The rest area serves both west and eastbound traffic so you can talk to people who have just come through the area you are heading into.
The other place you could run into problems with snow is the Donner Pass west of Reno. Plan on leaving Reno sometime after 10AM but before 3PM.

At the moment it looks like you might be able to thread the needle and get through Wyoming. The southern route has a snowstorm on Jan 1-2 but Wyoming looks clear. But always a crap shoot this time of year, there could be a localized squall out of nowhere. Keep watching the forecast and see if you have to make a break for it or pull up short somewhere and wait out the conditions.

Here are screenshots, Unisys map for Jan 1, and forecasts for Gallup NM, and Rock Springs WY. And yes the pass between Cheyenne and Laramie will be good to get over.

My weather map looks totally clear today Jan. 1. I don't know why you would go to I80 when Cincy is practically ON i70.

As for chains, if you need chains get off the road and hole up in a motel.
