Nuremberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Hi folks - thanks in advance for any advice you could offer here.
I have four days to spend between Nuremberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Would it make more sense to stay all four nights in Nuremberg and take a day trip to Rothenburg (we'll have a car) or to spend three nights in Nuremberg and one in Rothenburg (or even two and two)?

I'd take a day trip from Nurnberg to Bamberg, one of nicest cities anywhere. Staying in rothenburg yes is neat folks say because you see the city after the tour bus hoards are gone but relocating also takes a lot of time for many.

I can’t comment on Nuremberg, but we stayed in Rothenburg last year for a couple of nights and loved it. We were there in September and the crowds were nonexistent except for the night watchman tour. We wondered where all those people came from as during the days the town was pretty empty. Anyway we had a wonderful time there and were glad we had a few nights. We stayed at the Spitzweg and highly recommend it. Great location inside the walls, fantastic host, excellent breakfast, and our room was very well kept and spacious.

You probably know about this but if not or for others Nurnberg has the largest intact relics of the Third Reich in Germany in Hitler's old Parade Grounds just south of town (S-Bahn station) with the stadium from which Hitler reviewed goose-stepping troops on a long parade ground restored to original glory and a documentation center, etc. Maybe not your thing but I really enjoyed - not the word really - taking it all in.

If you have a car, I say use it.
Go for 2 and 2.
Rothenburg is special anytime, but walking around the walls overlooking the valley, first thing in the morning, and then around the town late at night is mesmerizing. SO that is one night, and you can work Dinkelsbuehl or the Riemenschneider masterpiece in just outside of Creglingen in on day two.

We spent three nights in Nurnberg last summer, did day trips to Bamberg and Regensberg. Thought it was a perfect amount of time. Then went to Rothenburg for one night. An overnight in Rothenburg is essential because if you go on a day trip you will be there when all the other day trippers are there as well. It was totally different in the evening and early morning.
I am currently posting a trip report and just getting to the Nurnberg/Rothernburg section.
Bavaria to Bratislava and Back in three weeks

PalenQ - yes, actually that's partly why we're going to Nuremberg as I'm a Holocaust researcher. Previously had been to Theresienstadt, Berlin, Oswiecim, Mauthausen and other sites; Nuremberg is next on my bucket list.

If get to Berlin Sachenhausen I thought was a sobering site camp/memorial is a short train ride north of Berlin. Plotenzee Prison - where Hitler's enemies were hung on meat hooks till dead is another good site/
Munich I guess has opened a documentation center by where the Beer Hall Putsch was done - of course Hitler's Eagles Nest too - suppose you've been to those.
