Paddy - I try to make it something most folks will know about - there are so many long rivers in say the old Soviet lands that most never heard of. Just trying to have some fun.

Like ten of the longest 'European' rivers are in Russia or other areas once under Soviet control and the Volga was the only one I had ever heard of.

Could have said western Europe or originates in western Europe I guess.

Danube, Rhine, Arno, Oder, Tisza, Ebro, Vistula, Rhone, Elbe, Loire

Second tier would possibly have The Dordogne and the Liffey

I agree with Padraig, how could you leave out Ukraine and Russia (Dnepr, Volga, Don)

the Lounge is only open to a select few Fodorgarchs talking about the latest celebrity gossip, their own or relatives or friends illnesses, how much they hate Obama or Hillary or all Republicans - pure pablum.

Yup this is the Europe board - does it say only European Travel - I think having a knowledge of Europe on many facets makes one a better informed traveler - I never got why some would post 'shouldm't this be in the Lounge' - why take time to say that - just ignore the thread and let others have their fun plus the Lounge is a closed shop these days shrinking by the day as folks get banned, die or leave Fodors - there can be no replacements thus it is a dying entity.

We can't allow the Oder: it't doesn't satisfy the arbitrary rules. Nor the Elbe. Or if they are in, then the Vistula should be allowed.

Pal had excluded the former Soviet Republics - not the whole former East Bloc.
Thus Oder/Odra, Elbe/Labe are in as neither Poland nor Czech had been part of the USSR.

P.S... I had to google Tagus cause I was sure that there was no such river in Europe.
FYI.. since the last Romans died a few centuries ago, that river is called Tejo or Tajo.

The rule is "western Europe or originates in western Europe". Hence rivers that rise in central Europe and flow through central or eastern Europe ar not allowable. There is also an arguable case to be made against the Danube.

The English name for the Tejo is Tagus.

Dukey..if you've ever been to Roscommon deep in the heart of Michigan, you'd understand. They fold up the whole town at 8:00 pm. I think Pal is on the folding committee.

Pal.. nope, waterways on the continent are measured in kilometers, not mls or nautical miles.
Only distances on the open sea are calculated in nm. Or for aircraft navigation.
