Alaska Cruises - Princess versus Holland America?

Are there any significant differences btween these two lines in terms of type and mix of clientele, character of the ships, nature of the experience they provide: in short, any reason to go with one over the other?

I haven't cruised on Princess but I have twice on Holland America and we are looking forward to our third time this year.

We chose our cruises on itinerary first, then price and every time we've wanted to cruise Holland beat out all the rest. We are in our 60's if that makes any difference. We're not party animals so having quiet evenings suits us just fine. The food is fantastic.

I have cruised both HAL and Princess to Alaska. Both times, we sailed to Glacier Bay and this was our #1 priority in choosing a cruise. I had a fantastic time on both lines. I also had an inside cabin both times. HAL had the better cabin, as it included a sofa. The Princess inside cabin did not have a sofa. The clientele on HAL was definitely older. I was 58 at the time and I felt YOUNG. Food was very good on both lines, but I would give the nod to Holland America for food. There was more to do in the evenings on the Golden Princess. It felt more alive.

I don't think you can make a mistake. Alaska is amazing and I would go again on Princess or HAL in a heartbeat.

Have fun!

I don't know why I assumed you were choosing a line to go to Alaska. If not, sorry about that.

mikesmom, Glacier Bay was also our #1 priority on our first cruise to Alaska. This time we are doing Hubbard Glacier just to compare.
