Best City in Southeast Asia (Indochina)
So, I am interested in Indochina and I want to know which is the best City to visit. I don't like ultra modern cities like Singapore, I prefer cities with more history, and more "Asian"and a bit off the beaten path. Any suggestions?

Well.... we like Bangkok because of its great tourism infrastructure- sky train, subway, river taxis, making it easy to navigate the city. The city mixes old and new and IMHO it has everything we look for- culture, great hotels, great food, shopping, temples, palaces, great markets.
As you no doubt can surmise its quite a popular destination on this forum!

Bangkok is my favorite city in the world. It's a combination of modern city and traditional Thai life. But there are many fascinating cities in SE Asia. A city with lots of historical interest is Hanoi, with it's traditional Old Quarter, and remnants of French Colonial influence. Luang Prabang, is a lovely town, the old cultural center of Laos. Yangon is fascinating, but the infrastructure is crumbling and walking is hazardous due to missing sidewalk sections that plummet into meter-deep ditches. Georgetown, Penang is a wonderful old port town, with a rich mix of cultures and wonderful street food.

Kathie covered most of my favorites. Another, not "Indochina" but in the region, that I love is Kuching, in Malaysian Borneo. It's not huge like Bangkok, not full of tourists as Luang Prabang has become, is in excellent repair unlike Yangon/Rangoon, has the colonial feel I love and is just an all-around relaxing and pretty place on a river. And very walkable and relatively inexpensive. Of the ones Kathie has mentioned I'd say it's most like Georgetown but more off the tourist trail.
