If you had one day outside of Orlando, what would you do?
Family (2 kids, 5&2) will be on Disney property for 11 days in September.
We have a car and would like to take some day trips. Can anyone recommend any places to go, keeping in mind the age of the kids. We would like to leave the Orlando area. We're thinking about Clearwater, but are not sure where in Clearwater is the best place to hang out. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are planning on driving back to the Disney hotel for your day trip, you'll just be hanging out at the beach, eating lunch and driving back. Clearwater Beach is probably the closest west coast beach driving from Disney. Cocoa Beach is an option to the east.

If the notion of swimming in some beautifully clear and chilly spring waters appeals to you, check out the nearby Wekiva Springs State Park. Canoe rentals on the spring-run river are available also. . . . Small-town Mount Dora is a nice day trip but not necessarily something the very young children would enjoy.

Considering the ages of your kids, I would also vote for the beach, probably Cocoa Beach because it is closer and you could also combine it with an airboat ride at the St. Johns River. Take SR 528 (AKA the Beachline) East from Orlando.
Wekiva Springs State Park is also a good suggestion and very appropriate for young children.

A visit to one of the zoos in the area might work with kids ages 5 & 2. The Central Florida Zoo is north of Orlando, near Sanford. The Brevard Zoo is north of Melbourne, off I-95. You should be able to get to either one from Disney within a decent time.
There are several parks in the Orlando area. When they were little, my kids enjoyed walking around Lake Eola (downtown Orlando), paddling in the swan boats, playing on the playground, and feeding the birds. A laid back day might be a nice break from the attractions.

Ft. De Soto or Clearwater beaches and the Kennedy Space Center top my list. The Gulf is really beautiful--white sand, warm water. You might enjoy Bok Tower and Gardens in Lake Wales, keeping in mind that this is a very small town; Google for more info.

Kennedy Space Center would be one suggestion. Another cool place is WonderWorks. They bill themselves as the museum "where science has gone crazy". We did this a few years ago and had a blast.

How about a water park, excellent for the children and you folks will also enjoy the river run on a tube. Adventure Island in Tampa is the place, right next to Busch Gardens. Enjoy your stay.

With kids aged 2 and 5, I wouldn't drive over to the west coast. I think closest nice beach to Orlando is Canaveral national seashore, just south of New Smyrna, fun for kids with walkways through dunes, playground just north of there on A-1A, in Bethune Beach. Have lunch at JB's and an easy drive back.
