Yeah, not only because the Parkway may interest you, but the Interstates you'd drive (65 to 20 to 59) are mind-numbingly dull, especially I-59.

Or you could go west to Memphis, gorge yourself on BBQ, blues and Elvis sites, then go down the river road and tour some of the plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana, visit some Civil War battlefields, stop at the Angola Penitentiary Museum in Louisiana (which is worth a detour) and pass through the capitals of both states en route to NOLA.

We did that trip in October 2016. Being from Australia everything we saw and did was an adventure. After spending 3 nights in Nashville we drove down to Memphis for a further 3 nights and had great time at Graceland, Sun Studios, checking out the Mississippi River, The Civil Rights Museum, and generally being tourists. As Big Russ said, the BBQ and Blues in the city are amazing.

After that we drove down to Clarksdale and spent a couple of nights there. Clarksdale is on the blues trail so we went to Reds Juke Joint for a great night of blues. We also did a day trip down to Cleveland ( to see the Grammy Museum), then to Greenville and then Greenwood.

Next stop was Yazoo City and spent a night there based mainly on the brightly coloured Main Street. If you go stay at the Main Street Hotel. Each room is unique and the owners, Mamma Jo and her hubby were awesome, they even took us in their truck for a tour of the city and out for dinner. Overall everyone we encountered were super friendly and the places to eat were plentiful and delicious.

Then we drove down to the city of Natchez via Vicksburg and spent a couple of nights there. What a beautiful city. Right on the banks of the Mississippi River and so much history. So many beautiful old style houses.

After that it is just a few hours leisurely drive to New Orleans which we found to be big and brash but very accommodating. We enjoyed its food, atmosphere and sights.

Overall its an easy drive, with beautiful sights along the way, we loved the cotton fields because it is so unique to southern USA.

Southern style hospitality all the way. We will be back.

If you are interested in local foods, there are some interesting destinations in the area between the two cities. Look at Rosedale, Greenville, Cleveland....

It is really good advice. I have lived in Nashville and Jackson, MIssissippi, and Oxford, Mississippi, and they have found the high spots.
