Road Trip from Denver to New York City

We're planning a road trip from Denver to New York (Long Island, actually). My wife and I will have our 13 year old granddaughter and 1.5 year old Shih Zhu puppy in the car with us.

The puppy is easily entertained. The issue is the teenager. My wife is not a fan of long car rides but I think sharing the driving will take the edge off of that.

Are there any "must see" attractions along the way that will assuage the boredom of the teenager?

I'm considering Interstate 80 but am open to other suggestions. I don't want to blindly follow the commands that can emanate from my GPS but will do so if I have to.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Unless you're planning to see Chicago, I'd suggest taking I-70 all the way to Columbus, OH, then I-71 to I-80. That avoids the traffic on I-80 on the southside of Chicagoland.

The trip will be sometime this Spring/Summer. I wouldn't attempt it in the Winter. NY is miserable in the cold.
