Road trip from CA to Yellowstone

We want to visit Yellowstone this August, however, not sure if it's a good idea to fly there to save time or take advantage of road trips and see more places . We live in Southern California and have small kids (almost 7 and 3 years old). Only have 7 days to spare.

Any recommendations as to itinerary, lodging and transportation is appreciated. Also, if roadtrip is suggested, can you give us the best direction that is scenic? Thank advance

If you only have 7 days - there is no way you could drive to Yellowstone and back. That is more than 2,000 miles roundtrip. You'd be in the car 4+ out of your 7 days.

What is your budget -- August is very busy at Yellowstone so you'll probably have to search for accommodations outside the park.

No idea how much it costs for Yellowstone vacation for a family of 4.

Would you recommend flying then?

Check accommodation availability first. In park lodging https://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/ or the gateway towns of West Yellowstone or Gardiner, MT. The closest airports are West Yellowstone, Bozeman MT and Jackson WY. Fares tend to be more expensive to these small regional airports. The closest major airport is Salt Lake City about 5 hours away. 7 days is too short to drive from southern CA.

With 2 drivers you can make the cannonball run from San Diego to West Yellowstone in 15.5 hours (1070 miles) wheels turning. Change drivers every 3-4 hours. Stop to see SLC on the way back. If you decide to fly, your cheapest fares will be to SLC.

With a 7yo and a toddler strapped in the back seat? Not close to possible.
