This Oregon State PArk link is vey helpful as it identifies by geological regions; our favorite in the North Coast (lots of Forts, Lewis and Clark stuff, Fort Stevens, Coffenbury Lake swiming etc))

whatever,
Crater Lake is very scary and a place that children won't enjoy at all. I guess that's why it gets "must dos", 5 stars, 4 diamonds, and is often featured on the cover of a lot of tour books of Oregon. The rim drive is suggested in all of them that I read and I couldn't find in Frommers, Foders, or Lonely Planet to mention it as scary. As great as the Oregon Coast, Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood, Oregon Cave, etc-Crater Lake is the only National Park in Oregon.

I believe there is now a bus/trolley that makes the rim drive so you all can enjoy the scenery.
Did we ever decide how old the kids are?
My kids always loved Newport and the aquarium and the somewhat cheesy boardwalk and stuff in Seaside.
