For all those 20/30 somethings who have been to Mexico, where is a nice place to go and kick back relax and maybe do some hiking or snorkeling? My hubby & I were thinking of using our FF miles to get away in Dec-Feb and leave the baby behind

I've been weary of Mexico because I heard it can be dangerous and the food/water is toxic, yet i heard the Aztec ruins are pretty. I'm not against day trips with a reputable tour company.

Any advice would be great!

If you want to go visit Aztec Ruins or Maya them Riveria Maya ive been there and the ruins were amazing.(I dont really know the name of the place in english though)But if you want i can recommend you a hotel.

Someguy... I would love a hotel recommendation. I just need a jumping off point to help me get going.

Did you find this area you stayed at to be safe? Did you have any problems with the food or water or is that just a myth?

Sorry my last post didnt ave much detail.Ok the food and water toxic thing is pretty much a myth i didnt get sick when i been. When your visiting the ruins try Chichen Itza the hotel offert tours there and bring a hat and lots of water becous its very hot there in the sun. You can even climb up to the top of the Maya pyramid.And neard the hotel theres even a natural park were you can go snorkeling there.I hope this help you .

thanks for the recommendation. It looks like a very nice hotel and just the area we were looking for. Did you do the all inclusive plan? How were the restaurants/buffets?

Yup you need the Yucatan peninsula if ruins are what you're after. I only drink bottled water in Mexico and am careful about what foods I eat. I would not call it "dangerous" or "toxic" but it is pretty easy to get a little bit of stomach upset from poorly handled or prepared food. Although honestly I'd eat from a sidewalk taco stand before I'd eat at an all-inclusive hotel's buffet.

thanks suze...I was wondering about the buffet too. It sounded yucky. I'm not on a cruise and I'm sure it's not cruise quality.

Just about all major hotels and resort along the mayan riviera and cancun have water purification systems. I still wouldn't drink tap water, (they all have bottled water very available too), but you shouldn't have any major problems.

As far as buffets, from the all-inclusive I've been to (incuding Barcelo Maya), the buffets are fairly similar. You have to walk around the buffets to check out the various food stations. There is the usual steam table food, but they always have a few places where they cook the food right in front of you (grilled meat and fish, pastas, etc) and they usual have a fresh roast they carve on the spot. I tend to stick with the freshly cooked food whenever possible.
