Transfer from Liberia Airport to Arenal

Can shuttles and/or private taxis from Liberia to Arenal be booked upon arrival at the airport, or do we risk having no transportation if we fail to reserve something in advance?

My wife and I are scheduled to arrive in Liberia at 1:55 PM, and the last shuttle available that I've found leaves from a nearby hotel at 3:15 PM. I'm concerned that if we book this shuttle in advance and our flight is late, we will lose our money and be stuck with no transportation.

Our hotel in Arenal offered to book a private transfer, but the cost is more than 2.5x the shuttle price for 2 people. So we'd much prefer the shuttle. We've also considered renting a car, but it's likely that we wouldn't make it to Arenal before dark. I've read in other posts that it's recommended not to drive after dark.

I'm hoping that when we arrive in Liberia, we can see what time it is and then determine whether we can catch the shuttle or have to get a private taxi. Is this likely to be possible? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

We got a 4WD from Solid (office in the nearby Hilton Garden Inn) for 15 days for $460. Nice car, no problems, the drive from Liberia to the Arenal area is pretty easy, and very scenic. If you will not be exploring on unpaved/bad/mountain roads, an economical sedan will be much cheaper than that. Having freedom of transport is very nice!
