arenal/monteverde rental car or taxi

I am flying in to San Jose arriving in the morning. I am plan on going right to Arenal for 4 days then to Monteverde for 4 days. I would be flying back out of San Jose in the evening.
I am trying to decide if I should rent a car or take taxis? Any thoughts? I want safe yet affordable.

Thank you!

Safe and affordable is using the shuttle transport system. Several companies are offering so-called door-to-door transport using minibuses. Interbusonline, Anywherecostarica,Easyridercr, ... From Arenal to Monteverde best way jeep-boat-jeep, can be arranged in Arenal.

Renting a car is safe enough, and affordable if you do a little research on these and other boards. However, if you are going to drive to Monteverde, you will need a 4 wheel drive. You could also combine the shuttle transport with different pickup/drop off options.

We loved the jeep-boat-jeep. It was one of my husband's favorite parts of our trip!

I think it's really just up to you and your own personal preference. Interbus is a popular shuttle if you want to explore that option. Taxis are readily available in both areas if you need them. We loved Desafio's Jeep Boat Jeep too.
