Rio de Janeiro e Sao Paulo

Hey everybody:

I am flying to Recife, Brasil in June and I will have 2 long layovers in Sao Paulo (arriving) and in Rio de Janeiro (returning). I will basically have like 5-6 hours in each city.
Can anyone give me pointers of what I could do in such a short time? I've already been to Rio de Janeiro and have seen all the major things. I would just like to get out and do SOMETHING instead of waiting at the damn airport...

Sincerely,

Daniel Lee

Hi Daniel!
What time are you arriving in SP? International flights usually arrive between 5 and 7 am. The big problem in Sao Paulo is the traffic. It'll take you one and a half hours to get anywhere from the airport to the city if you arrive around 7. Trust me on this. It's a 17.000.000 people city. And don't forget you have to go back. Anyway I think you can try to reach Paulista Av. and visit both the museum and the beautiful park in front of it. There's a shuttle service to and from the international airport to Maksoud Plaza Hotel (at Paulista Av). The museum (MASP) restaurant has very good meals at reasonable prices. I hope I've helped. Have a nice trip!
Helma

Go to Imbu das arts in Rio. You can buyany art object, or tourist item, cheap and well down. Worth the trip.
Have a 3 (ft) by 3 water color under class on my office wall aquired there. also great miniatures (paintings) and lots of semi precious stones. etc. It will make you trip to sao paulo worth while. Cordially drk

I'd like to correct the info posted above. Embu das Artes (not Imbu des arts) is a very small city located 30 km from São Paulo (not from Rio). And I agree with Dion: Embu worths a visit.
Embu is great. I have been there several time. As I recall though, that all the artists set up their booths only on Sunday. However,I believe that the antique shops and other stores are open through out the week.
