From Liberia to Lake Arenal is about 2.5-3 hours. Plan for 3. We haven't been on that road for awhile, but it isn't high or scary. It has been, at times, rougher around the lake, but is probably much improved these days.

Good road from Papagayo to Liberia but it tends to be crowded to be aware. From Liberia to Canas on InterAmerican Highway - no problem. From Canas to Tilaran to La Fortuna, the only problem will be the road around the Lake which does have potholes so you will need to slow down and be watchful. The drive from Canas to Tilaran is very pretty with good roads.

You might make a stop at Llanos del Cortes - 14 miles south of Liberia, about 2 km off the road is a huge, beautiful waterfall with a little swimming beach and howler monkeys in the trees overhead.

For lunch or snack at a typical Costa Rican restaurant, stop at Las Cazuellas de Miravalles. It will be about 21 km south of Liberia and you will see the sign and a driveway with a yellow curb on your left. Tasty food at a good price, lovely shaded parking lot and very safe for your belongings. Excellent restroom and even a small playground for kids. (No - I am not involved in the business - just have eaten here a number of times.)

Other choices: just past the intersection where Rt 6 turns to go to Upala, you will cross the Rio Corbici and on the left is Rincon de Corobici restaurant. This restaurant overlooks the river and has excellent food. You could also arrange a float trip on the Corobici River if you have the time.

As you approach Canas, you will see a bit rice processing plant on your right and a yellow blinking light. Just past this, you will see a dark red bull ring on the left. This is where you turn to go to La Fortuna/Arenal. There is a good sign that says, "Lago Arenal." Then on to Tilaran and La Fortuna.

Depending on where you are coming from in the Papagayo area, it's about 45 minutes to Liberia, about 45 minutes to Canas from Liberia and then around two hours to La Fortuna, depending on traffic, etc. There are new traffic laws so don't speed or pass on the solid yellow line, no matter what anyone else is doing. There are hefty fines - $400 and up.

It's a pleasant drive and really no problem.

Sorry - that sentence should read " tends to be crowded SO be aware."
