One day in Quito

Ok - I have booked my trip to the Galapagos Islands and have one full day in Quito (and half of another). What must I see/do in Quito with only one full day? It will be after 10 days in Galapagos and the day before I head back tot he US. Thanks!

Head to the Old Historic section. There you can see a couple of their most beautiful churches, San Francisco & La Compañia de Jesus, the latter rather impressive with all the gold leafing in the interior of the church. If it's a nice, clear day, also head out to Panecillo Hill, where you can see the Virgin of Quito monument (you can actually see her from Old Town as well) as well as a panoramic view of Quito. Plus you can't miss the Middle of the World Monument. Corny but fun!

We had a good guide in Quito, his name is Carlos Puente. If you'd like his email address, let me know.

’m not a huge fan or booking city tours, however I would highly recommend “Andrea” to anyone that might be interested in getting the best out of Quito. She took me on a private city tour that lasted about 6 to 7 hours and saw EVERYTHING! I decided what time I wanted to start, how long I wanted to stay in each sight, when I was ready to move on…she was fantastic and the prices were practically the same as if I had booked one of those “sit on a bus” tours. Her e-mail address is [email protected] , phone 00 (593) 2 2232 206 and cell phone 00 (593) 92 340 626.

If you touch base with her, tell her that I said “hi” and that the painting sculpture she helped me buy at the MUSEO GUAYASAMIN looks fantastic at home.

Take care and enjoy the Galapagos!

I took a private tour to the Historic section and it was worthwhile. I saw the sights mentioned by quimbymoy.

The remainder of the day I spent shopping at the local craft market, which was a lot of fun.
