Here's Part #1 of my trip to Oaxaca--Mexico City. The Oaxaca portion to follow----------------------
OUR TRIP TO MEXICO August 7th thru August 17th 2004
We arrived from Boston in Mexico City on Sat. 8/7 at 12:30 PM via Aeromexico. The airline was very good both ways!
MEXICO CITY
The process of getting a safe taxi to our hotel was rather uneventful--as there is an "Official" taxi stand where you pay a fixed price before entering the taxi-the stand only has registered taxis.
The traffic from the airport to our hotel-Hotel Catedral - was quite heavy and went through endless streets of markets. Our hotel was behind the cathedral in the Zocalo in the historic area. The cathedral was very interesting and our hotel was very high quality--rooms were quiet, very neat and the restaurant was very reasonably priced. There were 2 rooftop areas with tables. We, a family of 4, got 2 rooms per night total cost for both was $100.
Near the Zocalo, we visited a building with many Diego Rivera murals. Also, in the same complex was a wonderful set of gardens.
On Sunday we went by taxi to the famous Museo Anthropologico. There, there are wonderful exhibits dedicated to various areas of Mexico. Next we went to the Museo de Arte Moderno. A real treat.
NEXT, a problem. Taxis. We needed a taxi from the museum to our hotel. So, my son Josh, who'd been in Mexico before herded us to a fancy American oriented hotel and had them arange a taxi for us. The taxi was very posh and cost the same as our original so so taxi.
A WORD ABOUT HOTELS AND TAXIS: In our experience, it turned out that a key to personal security in Mexico City is the staff of your hotel. Make sure the hotel is service oriented. We chose the Hotel Catedral from Fodor recommendations. When they arrange a taxi, it is only with taxis that they deal with regularly. So we were secure in subsequent taxi rides. However, at night, we were very cautious and only ventured to nearby restaurants for supper.
On Monday morning we took a taxi to TAPO, the bus station, and we had a pleasant 6 hour trip to Oaxaca on the ADO bus line. Luckily, our hotel also had a travel agent and she arranged for us to get the last 4 seats on the bus we wanted.
