Itinerary Help - Mexixo City and Yucaton (and maybe Oaxaca)
Hi, in July I am flying into Mexico for a 15 day holiday. I will spend about 6 days in Mexico City, I think, before, flying to Merida, spend some days there and do some day trips eg Uxmal, and then, I think hire a car and drive to Tulum, with a overnight in the Chichen Itza area.
1.Could anyone advise me on anything else to do on this trip, in this area (route to Tulum and around Tulum) and how long would be good to stay in Tulum area (I am not one to lay on the beach) ?
2.Also as I need to drive back to Merida for flight home if there is anywhere I could stop on way back from Tulum to Merida, maybe taking another route or would be better to just go straight back as it doesnt take too long?
3. Do you think the balance between Mexico City and the remainder of trip is about right in terms of days?
4. I was originally planning a trip to Oaxaca after Mexico City, but put off by transport options, ie times and costs of planes onwards to Merida and not over keen on long bus joumeys. Do you think I would be better leaving this in or will I have plenty to do without it?
Thanks for any advise, comments!!
Hopefully

Due to the time of year, I wouldn't be that keen for the heat in the Yucatan. I would be thinking Mexico City, Toluca, Puebla, Cuernavaca, Taxco, Oaxaca. Obviously not all, but some combination of these places. As far as the bus from MEX to OAX something like UNO or ADO GL is quite luxurious. Once you clear the traffic getting out of Mexico City its a really interesting trip if you go during the day. This is just me, as I try to avoid too much heat.

That depends on what you want to do in the area. It will likely take a few hours to see the ruins, so a night or two could be all you need. If you want to do other things in the area (e.g., snorkel in underground cenotes, visit Sian Ka'an, etc.), add another day or two.

Valladolid, Ek Balam, the cenotes of Dzitnup, Izamal, other parts of the Costa Maya, Coba. . . .

Agree with Dude - the Yucatan will be blazing hot in July. Hot hot hot. Would recommend Oaxaca instead. Mexico City can be a bit rainy at night in July but is otherwise very comfortable.
I love Mexico City so 6 days would be great for me but you might find that you can see and do everything you want to do in about 3 or 4 days.

The others are giving you good advice here. Our rule is to NEVER go below 5,000 feet in Mexico in the Summer. I don't know where you are from, but the heat in the Yucatan can be simply paralyzing for most northerners.
