Day tours Gold Museum in San Jose

Have been to Costa Rica several times to visit family in the Dominical area. Typically we fly into San Jose, spend a night at the airport, and depart next morning out of town. I ( female) will be traveling alone this September on this trip but would like to see San Jose, specifically the Gold Museum. Can anyone recommend safe tours that would pick up at airport hotel and do a tour ( 1/2 to full day) that would include Gold Museum? Have heard from Tico friends not to try it alone. Or should I consider a private guide ( if so, recommendations). Thanks for any suggestions.

I stayed at Pura Vida hotel and used their private guide to go into San Jose to see the Gold Museum (and the Jade Museum and central market).

The list a charge of $90 for a half day, My guide was not their usual "good" one though, you want Sterling.

You won't need a full day to see just the Gold Museum.

PS If you do stay there I recommend doing the dinner even though it's a bit pricey (for Costa Rica). I felt like Oprah.

Appreciate your recommendation. If I book, is it Sterling that I want? Can I request him specifically? Just not clear on that. Thanks!!

You could combine visits to the Gold Museum and the National Theater. They're next door to each other on the same plaza. Actually, the museum is under the plaza.

Just to clarify, the hotel doesn't "employ" Sterling, it's just someone they have worked with over the years for their guests.

The day I wanted to finally go into San Jose, he was already booked out.

I was pretty underwhelmed with the rest of downtown San Jose, the gold museum doesn't take long. Even the Jade museum has so much overlap with the Gold Museum you don't need to see both. So you might ask to just book a taxi in and taxi out, where they wait for you, rather than a "guide".

If you want to see a GREAT Gold Museum, save it for Bogotá.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I just hook Xandari ( great green season rates) and will talk to them as well. Will try to include National Theater on my tour.

We stayed at Xandari on one of our trips. Loved that place - really beautiful with some nice trails on site and beautiful views.
