Buenos Aires questions
So I think I want to head to Buenos Aires for vacation and have a few questions:
1. With the limited vacation I have available, am I cutting myself short by only being there 4 days. Of course I catch a "bug" causing me to use a sickday and make it 5 days. I will be travelling solo so is there enough to fill 5 days in the city.
2. I would like to go to a soccer match, specifically River Plate. Has anyone has any experience using Tangol? I know that there is the other company but I cannot remember/find its name.
3. My final question is about safety. I have seen some messages stating that crime is rampant and others stating to be aware like any other big city. I have travelled solo in europe before and have lived about 3 years ago in manhattan (NY not kansas -> although I heard manhattan, kansas is pretty tough).
Thanks for any advice.

Five days? Maybe not. Five nights? ah, yes, and more.
Tangol. Good service. They pick you up and return you after a soccer game. Seats are sold at inflated prices, but that is true with most resellers. River is a great choice! The stadium is in a much better location than Boca's...and the team is better!
Safety. Crime is certainly not rempant. I look like an easy target...a gray haired, out of shape Gringo...and I have never been victimized in my many travels to Buenos Aires...and I assure you I don't stay locked up in my hotel room while I am there....(Wish I could say I have had the same kind of luck in Manhattan...but, alas, I was mugged in Times Square a number of years back).....

I don't understand how you got the crime is rampant idea. It is one of the safest big cities in south America and safer than many US cities. There are 3 million tourists visiting Argentina annually and many want to return. I have visited 12x and never encountered anything remotely unsafe.

Thank your for your help.
I guess the nervousness is sort of the mind state that we get here when we have to go to Miami. Maybe living in So. Florida provides a perspective (I would never take out a map if I was in a neighrborhood I don't know), that causese you to get nervous when you read from the papers that there is crime that would want you to hesitate on taking a trip.
Thank you dr. dwaggy. I saw from other posts that you visit there about yearly so I hope you don't mind if I ask you some questions between now and then.
I think some of it is braggidado but right now I schedeuled to go as planned.
Thank you for your help.

billsrulz,
I have visite Buenos Aires three or four times per year since 2001.
One visit per year is for an extended stay (2 to 3 months) and the other visits range from one to two weeks.
If I had concerns about safety, I would not spend so much time in BA.....
Ask away, as you have questions.

There is much to see and do in BsAs. I have a long file that I compiled when planning our trip there last November. If you would like it, please e-mail me.
Incidentally, I think we are probably in Dr. D's "peer group" and we got along fine. Walked around after dark and visited many neighborhoods. We were told to be alert in La Boca and San Telmo, areas in both of which can be dangerous after dark.

Billsrulz,
* 5 days? I have been to BA +6 times and there's always something new. I have so many friends that have travelled there and asked for tips that I have even created an e-mail entitles "My take on BA". E-mail me if you want it. [email protected]
* I have never used Tangol. But by all means you are SO right on wanting to experiencing this. I have just been to a soccer game in Maracana(Rio) and that was the highlight of my trip.
*Safety. You should not worry about that at all. There are some kids that will approach you asking for spare change - but that has changed, there are fewer now. BA is one of the safest capitals in South America. I studied there for a while and used to head back to my hotel at 11PM all by myself. I never had any problem.
Of course, it's not like you strolling in Beverly Hills. But, BA is 100 times safer than Rio os Sao Paulo.
You are fine! Use extra caution on the soccer stadium and enjoy the alfajores!

Hi Avrooster, thanks for the welcome. I've been swamped with family and taking on a promotion at work so haven't been on the boards in ages. Unfortunately I have no immediate plans for Argentina but now it turns out I'm going to Chile in November!! It seems my talk in BA has triggered an invitation to speak in Chile so the adventure continues!
