Help Planning a Trip to South America

I have never been to South America before but have travelled extensively through Europe.

Planning a trip in December. Around 2 to 3 weeks. I have been recommended by my father in law (argentinian) to go to Rio, Buenos Aires, Punta Del Este and Iquazu. I have yet to buy a good South American Map so I don't know what kind of distances we are talking about but I would imagine that flying would be necessary between the various countries.

Is a trip like this doable in 2-3 weeks. Any other recommended places? I was thinking fly to Rio 3 nights Fly to Buenos Aires 4 nights Fly to Iquazu 2 nights. Fly to Punta Del Este 3 nights.

When we travel around Europe we often rent a car and have driven extensively through different countries. Is this recommended in South America? Is it safe? I will have 2 children with me (4 and 7).

Any good ideas for mapping out an itinerary for me?

Will be going today to get maps, guidebooks etc.

Just looked at a map. Looks like Rio is out of the equation.

So I have flight from Miami to Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires (4 or 5 nights) recommended day trips or areas around reachable by car or train?

Flight to Iquazu and return to Buenos Aires (2 nights in Iquazu).

Hydrofoil From BA to Punta Del Este. Rent a car. Any recommended side trips.

So far this is a ten day vacation - would like to be 14 - 18 days. Any suggestions for add ons?
Thanks

hi
You will be in Buenos Aires, Iguazu, Uruguay. Four extra days, try Salta, the Lake District or Calafate.

I have an extensive file on BsAs that I compiled when planning our trip last November. We did a day trip to Tigre, Delta area (train can be used), two nights in Puerto Iguazu, day trip to Colonia, Uruguay. If you'd like the file, please e-mail me.

Milla is right, The NW of Argentina is a good choice. The varied scenery deserves to be seen.
Any questions about that area? I can answer anything about the NW.
