Any safety concerns for Playa Del Carmen (March 2011)

Hello, we're just about to book our honeymoon to Playa for March. Anything we should be concerned about? Are there any safety issues?

Thanks much!

No. No.

I assume you're talking about what you've heard in the media about drug cartels and violence in some of the major cities and some of the border towns? It has nothing to do with tourists in Playa del Carmen.

No. I was there with my family over the holidays. I never felt in any danger whatsoever.

I was there for two weeks over the holidays and felt no danger....nor did I stray far from the tourist area. They have Marines and other law officers patrolling the beach on foot and on jeeps and carrying automatic weapons, but that display just made me feel safer.

Take the same precautions that you would take anywhere else. March is one of the busier times of year so there are people who do not have the best intentions as far as pick pockets or ATM theft. Do not use ATM's on the street/only at the banks. Do not walk with your purse hanging out in the street when you're on the sidewalk. Do not get so drunk at a bar in the middle of the night and then try and get home by walking down dark streets. Check your restaurant tabs to make sure you get the right one and are charged the correct amount. This includes beach clubs. Don't get involved in drugs.
Other than that you'll be fine. Enjoy the beach and be a tourist. The drug violence you see is not in Playa.

We've been going to Playa for many years. As far as our experiences, it's been as safe as most places in the USA. We've wandered the streets blocks away from the beach area late at night (where the really good restaurants are) and have always felt safe. Your biggest threat will be too much sun. Playa is a great place for a honeymoon.
