Your best Costa Rica advice please! First timers for December 7-16

Make sure Manuel Antonio is open the days you want. All national parks are close Monday and many (maybe ALL) are closed Tuesday; the closed Tuesday is recent in the last year or two.
Roads are awful. Rentals are expensive. The drivers are really really awful. Don't drive at night!
But if you do rent get a 4x4, not a huge one, a small one will do.
I never drive any more. I use 10-15 person van services like montezumaexpeditions.com (or someone else like Interbus) which drive me door to door for cheap(!), usually $40-$45. Check out their rates and the hotel/shuttle packs (I think Casa Tago is the nicest cheap hotel for the packages) which get you the cab fair and (usually) breakfast. They also run a taxi boat from Jaco to Montezuma. I don't see Manual Antonio to Monte Verde but I bet they can combine runs.
Check out Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula. My favorite place on the planet.
