Where to go in Belize??

I'm considering a week vacation in Belize with two friends. We aren't backpackers...but are on a somewhat of a budget... We are interested in Ambergris Caye but don't scuba dive....besides snorkeling, is there much else to do? We would also like to do the ruins/jungle stuff too...should we split our time between two spots? Could we do this without renting a car? Also, we are planning on the first week of April. Does the country shut down for easter week or anything else that we should know of? Any recommendations/advice would be very much appreciated... (Also...I was just in Costa Rica on the Carribean side in January...is Belize similar?)

You can split your trip between the beach and a lodge or hotel on the mainland close to impressive Maya sites, caves with artifacts, river, jungle and horse trips, waterfalls, different cultures and more. Or stay on the island or another beach destination like Placencia and take day trips to the mainland. Easter is busy with visitors, all services are operating. Books in advance. The two contries have some similiarities, except Belize is English speaking, multi cultural, has the largest barrier reef inb teh hemisphere, 3 atolls, cave systems, Maya sites.

Hi
We split a trip between Caye Caulker and San Ignacio. There's more to do on Ambergris but we prefer Caulker. You can read our trip report and see several pictures on our family web site.

We didn't rent a car and you wouldn't have to. It isn't cheap to get the lodge to come from San Ignacio to pick you up but the rental car isn't cheap either.

From where ever you stay in San Ignacio, you can get to Caracol to see the ruins or to Tikal in Guatemala.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! Sounds like we have a few different options...lodge/beach is probably the best bet. We will probably do Ambergris Caye - does anyone recommend a lower-priced lodge in San Ignacio?

Here are links to the 2 places we stayed in the area - loved them both!

www.belizecamp.com (Macal River Jungle Camp)

Let me know if you have questions about them - we remember a thousand lovely details about each.

The Jaguar Reef Lodge offers a lot of fun tours and the prices are great.
