What is a cenote?

Pardon my ignorance but in planning a trip to Mexico, I see this referenced quite often. So what is a cenote?
Thanks

Big sink hole in the limestone, usually filled with water.

--Lan Sluder

Cenotes are a beautiful geographic feature of the Mexican Yucatan and not to be missed. These large pools open onto caves and subterrainean waterways which are open for tours and exploring (dive/snorkel). Many were religeous sites and depositories of artifacts---so they say. Their warm, blue-green waters give them an other-worldly glow in the jungles near Tulum, Akumal, etc. A word of advice, plan your cenote snorkel at least 3-4 days after a rain so that the waters are clear rather than milky.

We snorlelled in the cenotes and the water was crystal clear and very cold. The fish were beautiful as were the limestone formations under the water.

There also are underwater cenotes, in the Caribbean off Mexico and Belize.

--Lan Sluder
