What about the bugs in Roatan, etc.?

What about the bugs in Roatan? Are they that bad? What can I do about them? Should I buy a bug net for my head? What kinds of bug repellent should I use?
What about malaria? Is it a genuine concern? Are there certain shots I should get before going on the trip?

What is the nightlife like in Roatan? Where should I go for the best nightlife?

What is it like to swim with the dolphins there?

What about horseback riding at Anthonys Key? What can kind of trails do they have? Do they let you run the horses? How accessible are they?

I'd really appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Thanks,

Jay
I;ve never been to Roatan but I've been to Utila. The sand flies on Utila are small enough to get through a mosquito net and bite you. There doesn't seem to be much protection against this so reckon you're going to get bitten. Then figure out how to stop the itching. I found the best thing was to go to a chemist's in La Ceiba on the maionland there they know the problem. Basically they gave me antihistamine tablets which were great. Take one in the morning and don't itch all day and no messy cream. If you're diving in Roatan you'll make friends on the boat anyhow and the people will already know the coolest places to go. As both islands are not that far removed from the mosquito coast I should imagine mosquitos and malaria are a big issue from time to time there. Ask your doctor who will be able to advise you. Normally I take Paludrine and Chloroquine but there was a resistant strain of mosquito to Chloroquine making its way up from the Darian Gap, Panama. Your doctor will also recommend your shots. The longer you put it off the less ikely you are to complete your immunisation program as live vaccines have to be given two weeks apart.

I was in Roatan last November and the bugs were there, but they're also here in south Georgia where I live. Take a Deet-based repellant like deep woods off and you'll be fine. The CDC web site will have info on what shots/malaria stuff you may need.

For nightlife, go to West End. There's one street (sand) with bars, restaurants, etc. As far as I know, there's no disco or anything, but some laid-back places to sip a Salva Vida.

Have fun.
