Wal-Mart? You've got to be kidding. . .

It's been easy to pretend Wal-Mart doesn't exist since it has used other names (Hipermas, etc) to represent itself in Costa Rica. . . . but NOW! Geez.

It is a sad day for Costa Rica. Look for many Mom and Pop stores to close up when these stores are built - just like everywhere else. As far as employment goes, it is kind of like taking a job with The Devil.

As Shillmac said, WalMart owns some stores in Costa Rica but they have other names - Mas x Menos, Pali, MaxiBodega -- so not quite as painful, even though there is a big "WalMart" printed at the bottom of your receipt.

No worries for rural or sparsely populated areas. They are not foolish enough to plunk down big stores where there are no people to buy the stuff.

Very sad Hsmithcr.....Wal Mart is fighting tooth and nail to get into NYC and we are fighting back. There are thousands upon thousands of mom and pop stores and businesses that WalMart will destroy....what will they offer in place? Low wage jobs.

WalMart is already a big presence in Guatemala .... they bought a big part of the old Paiz supermarket family which now includes Maxi-Bodega, Dispensa Familiar, Paiz, Hiper Paiz, and ClubCo (their membership store).
