Boat or fly to Tortuguero?
With the help of this forum, I think I have most of my itinerary figured out, thanks!
For our trip to Tortuguero, I am considering the option of flying instead of taking a boat from Limon. However, I hear the boat ride from Limon to Tortuguero is not to be missed.
Can someone enlighten me as to how this boat ride is different from the canal tours once we get to tortuguero?
thanks

Trust me, you will be on a boat enough once you get there. Almost all of the sight seeing will be done by boat so I wouldn't worry about it.
I have never heard that the trip was not to be missed. I guess if it is your first time....anything in CR is neat but, unless you have lots and lots of time, I would fly. Flying allows you to really see a different perspective on the overall landscape.

Tortuguero is on the agenda for the next trip (maybe next winter), and I've just sort of planned on taking the boat one way and flying the other. Save some time, but still wouldn't feel like I might 'miss something'. Just an idea. Jean

We took the boat both ways, but had I to do it over, I would boat one way, fly the other. We would have missed increased chances for spotting wildlife, including a viper and a huge crocodile on the way over. However, we would have been happy to have missed the torrential rains that followed those sitings! Weather and wildlife sitings both to and through the canals of Totuguero is luck-of-the-draw, so there's no perfect way to do it. We saw quite a bit that we didn't see on the canals.
The canals are much narrower, with supposedly improved chances for spotting wildlife.
