Still working on this trip. Anyone have any car rental places they have used and recommend? Still thinking about organizing this myself rather than using a company. Thanks!

KFL - Regarding rental cars...hate to RTFM you...but there are several excellent threads here with recent info that cover nearly everything a person would need to know (and then some) regarding the entire car rental experience.

Hi, KFL, We have used Dollar three times and been very happy with them. On our trips we usually arrive late and have them pick us up at the hotel the next day and take us to the rental place near the airport. Last time we went to the desk and their van drove us to the rental place and we were able to drive to our next stop the same day.I think it is a lot of fun to drive yourselves and you have more freedom to do what you want to do.If you want to reverse the order you could drive to Arenal, etc, and then drive back to San Jose and fly to Manuel Antonio because you can get along fine there without a car.

I think this sounds pretty good. be aware that driving is much slower than you would think. however once you fly from san jose to manuel antonio you might opt to drive back- the flight can be quite intense- fun but a little scary if the weather is rough. we found the driving to be very easy. also almost everything was $70 per person( 2 years ago) ie zipline, rafting, horseback riding- so the price you got is not bad.
