Transportation San Jose to Monteverde

Anyone have experience getting to Monteverde from San Jose? Price quoted on the Monteverde website is $100/person!! Hard to imagine as we're flying to SJO for $38 using freq. flyer miles. Don't want to drive as I've heard it's the worst road in CR. If hiring a driver, where does he go while you're there????

It's an ok 3 hour drive in the dry season (although we had no problems in a rental car in the rainy season). Gravel in places, mostly fine.
"Buses depart twice daily from from the Coca Cola bus depot in San Jose. Times are 6:30 am and 2:30 pm. The station is the "old Puntarenas" bus stop and the busses to Tilaran leave from this same depot. The ride takes more than 5 hours."

interbusonline.com best if 2 or less from $30 or so

Graylinecr.com another good shuttle.

Drivers like odysseytourscr.com Al Diego price the trip

for a return so they can go home why it costs so much...

Nice guys if you have the $$$

Usually for me servicecarrental.com wild-rider.com for

under $200/wk best the road is rutted drop offs not bad.

I love the freedom and saving of car rental do it a lot there

Tonnes of fun go slow but if not adventurous

do the shuttle/driver...

If superbudget thebusschedule.com not too bad theft risk

put nothing in the overheads but the very cheapest way to go

Good luck!

We drove to Monteverde and if you are cautious, the road is ok, just don't do it after dark. You don't want to drive anywhere in Costa Rica after sunset.

We stayed at Arco Iris Lodge in Santa Elena, duplex cabin, loved it.

p.s. a budget friendly place we liked was Cabinas Pinos; really nice grounds, quiet location a little above town but walkable to grocery, restaurants, etc.

We used Wilson Rojas to drive us from SJO to Monteverde for $150. Loved him! We stopped at a little restaurant near his house for lunch and then went on to Monteverde. As mentioned, the last hour is very bumby and curvy and we were very glad he was driving because it allowed us to observe the surroundings. He was great at spotting animals and birds and stopped for photos whenever we saw anything interesting. He also took us from Arenal back to the Alajuea area.
